Draping of Kanchipurama Sarees

Draping a Kanchipuram saree involves creating pleats and draping the pallu (the ornate end of the saree) in a specific manner. Start by making pleats on the palla section, securing them with pins, and then wrapping the saree around the body, tucking it in neatly. The final step involves draping the pallu over the shoulder and securing it with a pin, creating a classic and elegant look.

Detailed Steps for Draping a Kanchipuram Saree:

  1. 1. Prepare the Saree:
  2. Begin by pleating the palla (ornate end) of the saree. Use pins or safety pins to secure the pleats, ensuring they are neat and even.
  3. Flatten the pleats and crease them properly.
  4. 2. Tucking in the Saree:
  5. Wrap the saree around your waist, tucking in the ends from the right side. Continue wrapping until you reach the front.
  6. Ensure the saree drapes neatly and smoothly around your waist.
  7. 3. Draping the Pallu:
  8. Once the saree is wrapped, pick up the pallu and begin pleating it.
  9. Wrap the pleated pallu around your waist and place it on your left shoulder, facing towards the front.
  10. Secure the pleats on your shoulder with a pin.
  11. 4. Adding the Lower Skirt Pleats:
  12. Take the remaining fabric and make pleats for the lower skirt.
  13. Fold the pleats to the front, and tuck them at the waist.
  14. Ensure the pleats are neat and evenly spaced.
  15. 5. Final Touches:
  16. Adjust the pallu and pleats for a desired look.
  17. Secure the pallu with a pin if necessary.
  18. You can choose to wear a kammarbandh (waist belt) to enhance the look.

Tips for a Perfect Drape:

  • Wear a petticoat:

A petticoat underneath the saree helps to create a smooth and elegant drape.

  • Secure the pleats:

Use pins or safety pins to secure the pleats, especially on the palla and lower skirt.

  • Experiment with different draping styles:

There are various ways to drape a Kanchipuram saree, so feel free to experiment and find the style that suits you best.
