Kanchipuram silk sarees are treasured for their rich fabric, intricate zari work, and long-lasting beauty. To preserve their quality and vibrancy for generations, they require proper care. Here’s a guide on how to take care of your Kanchipuram silk sarees:
1. Storage Tips
- Fold carefully: Always fold the saree with the zari (border/pallu) turned inside to prevent it from rubbing and wearing off.
- Use cotton/muslin cloth: Wrap the saree in a breathable fabric like pure cotton or muslin before storing it. Avoid plastic covers, as they trap moisture and can cause mildew.
- Store in a cool, dry place: Keep away from direct sunlight and damp areas.
- Change folds regularly: Refold the saree every 3–6 months to avoid permanent creases and tearing along fold lines.
2. Washing & Cleaning
- First wash – Dry clean only: For the first few washes, and preferably always, dry cleaning is best.
- Avoid harsh detergents: If hand washing, use a mild detergent (like baby shampoo) and cold water.
- No soaking: Never soak the saree for a long time. It can damage the silk and zari.
- Rinse gently: Don’t wring or scrub. Gently rinse and drip dry in shade.
3. Ironing
- Use low heat: Always iron on low to medium heat. Place a cotton cloth on top of the saree while ironing to avoid direct contact.
- Avoid steam on zari: Steam can tarnish the metallic threads in the zari.
4. Handling Zari (gold/silver thread)
- Keep zari away from perfumes/deodorants: Alcohol and chemicals in sprays can tarnish the zari.
- No starching: Do not apply starch on sarees with zari.
5. Occasional Airing
- Take the saree out once every few months and let it breathe in indirect sunlight or a shaded area. This prevents any musty odor or fungal growth.
6. Pests and Protection
- Use neem leaves or cloves: Natural repellents like neem leaves or cloves (wrapped in muslin) can keep insects away without damaging the fabric. Avoid naphthalene balls directly on the fabric.
